The Walt Disney Company (DIS) saw its stock price surge over 8% in after-hours trading on Wednesday after the media and entertainment conglomerate posted stronger-than-expected quarterly results across multiple fronts. Disney also significantly boosted returns to shareholders via a 50% dividend increase to $0.45 per share, instituted a new $3 billion share repurchase program starting next fiscal year, and made a series of high-profile announcements that showcase the company’s growth strategy.
On the financial front, Disney delivered adjusted earnings per share of $1.22, which soundly beat analyst estimates of $0.99. Total revenue of $23.5 billion slightly missed expectations. However, losses in Disney’s streaming division narrowed substantially to $138 million, compared to a $984 million loss in the prior year quarter. This demonstrates early progress in restoring profitability after recent price hikes. Total streaming losses across Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu amounted to $216 million, dramatically improving from the $1.05 billion loss last year.
“We continue to expect to reach profitability at our combined streaming businesses in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2024,” Disney stated. “We believe this business will ultimately be a key earnings growth driver for the company.” Additionally, you can also read about- Paytm’s Stock Plummets 80% Since Launch.
Disney Entertainment chairman Bob Iger, who recently returned as CEO, teased a series of significant announcements showcasing new growth initiatives:
• A $1.5 billion investment in video game maker Epic Games, which Iger called Disney’s “biggest entry ever into the world of video games.” The move integrates Disney’s beloved franchises into Epic’s hugely popular metaverse title, Fortnite.
• Disney+ landing exclusive streaming rights to the “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” concert film featuring five additional acoustic performances.
• Confirmation of an ESPN over-the-top streaming service launching in Fall 2025 with a firmer timeline right before the next football season.
• A planned crackdown on Disney+ account sharing is slated to begin in March to further boost revenue.
The slew of announcements and strong quarterly performance signal a potential inflection point for Disney after a turbulent period. Iger has moved rapidly to cut costs and position Disney’s streaming business, in particular, back towards profitability.
However, linear networks continue to erode, with revenue falling 12% year-over-year in the quarter. Live sports also remain pressured, though losses have markedly improved.
With losses narrowing in streaming, margins recovering in parks, shareholder returns increasing substantially, and significant strategic moves underway, Disney offered real signs of progress in the quarter that enthused Wall Street traders after hours. For a company facing major near-term headwinds, Disney delivered blockbuster news on multiple fronts at a critical time.
