Santa Clara-based chipmaker Nvidia continued its gravity-defying stock market ascent on Wednesday, with its market capitalization swelling to a staggering $1.83 trillion. In doing so, Nvidia officially surpassed Google-parent Alphabet’s $1.82 trillion market cap to lay claim to the title of Wall Street’s most valuable artificial intelligence stock.
Nvidia’s share price rose 2.5% to $739 amidst intense bullish sentiment, standing in stark contrast to broader economic turbulence and worries over towering interest rates. The company has been one of the biggest beneficiaries as investors pile into AI-focused technology leaders, spurring a surge that has seen Nvidia’s stock rocket over 240% higher in the last year alone.
Buoyed by AI hype reaching feverish levels, Nvidia has led a crop of tech high-flyers dubbed the “Magnificent Seven” to breathtaking gains since early 2023. Investors are betting these companies, which include Meta and other AI trailblazers, can sustain a torrid pace of expansion as artificial technology proliferates across consumer and enterprise settings over the coming decade. However, with Nvidia’s valuation now exceeding $1.8 trillion on expectations of flawless execution, some are urging caution around the stretched growth assumptions underlying today’s stock price. “The valuation for this company is based on a very rapid growth rate. Anything that could potentially derail that growth rate would have a very negative impact,” warned Morningstar’s Dave Sekera earlier this week.
Nonetheless, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says it remains “important to democratize AI technology” so countries worldwide can tap their digital potential. With governments rushing towards “sovereign AI” capabilities, Nvidia sits intriguingly at the intersection of business profits and national interests as artificial intelligence advances.
For now, though, Wall Street appears fixated solely on profit potential as Nvidia extends its lead as the top AI darling after brushing past previous favorite Alphabet. Whether such tremendous expectations can withstand any wobbles remains the multi-billion-dollar question for investors flocking to own a piece of AI’s new leader.
