FAA Review Urges Major Overhaul of Boeing’s Safety Practices

FAA Review Urges Major Overhaul

A scathing new report commissioned by the Federal Aviation Administration asserts that Boeing has utterly failed to implement the operational safety improvements it has touted in response to two fatal 737 MAX crashes that killed 346 people. Despite verbose claims from top executives about safety being the company’s number one priority, the report cited a persistent and alarming disconnect between leadership’s rhetoric and the on-the-ground realities facing engineering and production staff.

According to the report, Boeing employees still face implicit and explicit retaliation for surfacing safety concerns that could delay aircraft certification or manufacturing operations. The report also flagged a major brain drain of experienced engineers critical for effective FAA oversight, as well as the systematic destruction of Boeing’s human factors analysis capabilities in prior years – issues that clearly contributed to the MAX tragedies.

The expert panel behind the findings included over 25 leading industry safety specialists from the FAA, NASA, major airlines, pilot unions, and academia. One member, Javier de Luis, lost his sister in the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines crash and still awaits decisive action from Boeing that lives up to executives’ vocal commitments. With 53 recommendations for urgent, milestone-driven change, the report amounts to a comprehensive rejection of Boeing’s safety progress to date – coming nearly five years after the second 737 MAX disaster that sparked this intensive evaluation.

FAA leadership stated they will immediately review the damning conclusions and determine requisite next steps. Meanwhile, Boeing claims they will carefully assess the critique, even as fresh quality control failures continue plague aircraft production and erode public trust. With 346 lost lives weighting the moral imperative for reform, the panel made clear that Boeing must demonstrate substantive, organization-wide safety improvements – and fast.
