As companies across the globe experiment with 4-day workweeks, new research reveals how the exponential growth of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the workplace could enable more firms to successfully shift to condensed schedules.
A survey conducted in late 2023 by London-based Tech.co collected responses from over 1,000 business leaders in the United States. The data showed that a striking 29% of organizations currently operating on a 4-day week utilize AI technology extensively throughout company operations, implementing advanced generative AI systems such as ChatGPT as well as other automated programs to optimize workflows.
Comparatively, among companies still operating on a traditional 5-day workweek schedule, only 8% reported extensive usage of artificial intelligence to the same comprehensive degree. Moreover, the survey found that 93% of businesses leveraging AI tools are actively open to transitioning their teams to an abridged 4-day regimen in the future. For companies not invested in AI, less than half indicated they would consider reducing the workweek.
The polling statistics lend credence to expert perspectives that AI-powered efficiencies can unlock the flexibility for condensed schedules. “By handing over mundane responsibilities to automated AI systems, we recapture invaluable time that used to be lost in slow, repetitive tasks,” explained Abb-d Taiyo, co-founder of London-based digital creative agency Driftime.
Driftime credits its AI tools like graphics generator Modyfi for revolutionizing its design process. “With dynamically customizable graphics, our designers can mock up concepts exponentially faster,” Taiyo said. “Instead of declining productivity crammed into 4 days, we’ve seen elevated quality matched by very high employee satisfaction – their health and contentment translates directly into phenomenal work output.”
Shayne Simpson, managing director of UK-based tech recruiting firm TechNET IT, agrees AI has been integral to successfully implementing a 4-day week. Analytics estimate the firm’s AI tools save each consultant 21 hours per week by intuatively automating essential but mundane work like screening resumes, coordinating interviews, managing candidate outreach campaigns.
