Bitcoin notched its largest monthly gain in over three years in February, climbing an impressive 48% to reach an all-time high of $63,000. This massive price surge marks Bitcoin’s best monthly performance since December 2020, according to data from TradingView.
Market experts believe this parabolic rally was primarily driven by the recent approval and launch of Bitcoin spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States. These ETFs have enabled both retail and institutional investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin through traditional brokerage accounts and stock exchanges.
“Not only are retail investors putting more money directly into Bitcoin, but spot Bitcoin ETFs have also allowed them and institutional investors to move into the space, when previously there was only a small set of investors who could access Bitcoin,” said Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise Asset Management, a provider of crypto index funds and ETFs.
According to Hougan, who spoke during a CNBC “Squawk Box” interview, “the supply-demand dynamic is just off the hook now” thanks to these new investment vehicles. But he believes this is just the beginning of mainstream adoption.
“There’s an even bigger wave coming in a few months as we start to see the major wirehouses turn on,” Hougan explained. Wirehouses refer to large brokerage firms like Morgan Stanley, UBS, and Merrill Lynch that cater to high-net-worth investors. Reports indicate these Wall Street stalwarts are actively exploring spot Bitcoin ETF offerings.
The impact of surging institutional interest, when combined with other bullish factors like Bitcoin’s upcoming “halving” supply shock in 2024 and increasing macroeconomic uncertainty, has some ultra-bullish predictions for Bitcoin’s future trajectory.
Thomas Lee, Managing Partner at Fundstrat Global Advisors, believes Bitcoin could hit $150,000 by the end of 2023 and potentially surge as high as $500,000 within 5 years fueled by this ongoing mainstream adoption. Anthony Scaramucci, founder of SkyBridge Capital, projects Bitcoin could reach $170,000 by mid-2025 on the back of this momentum.
Of course, successfully reaching these lofty targets depends greatly on whether both institutional and retail interest can be sustained for the long-term. It also hinges on supportive regulations that encourage financial innovation rather than hinder it through overbearing oversight.
For now, Bitcoin continues ascending into uncharted price territory – serving as both a speculative digital asset and a potential hedge against global financial instability. Where it goes next in this monetary revolution remains to be seen. But the fireworks have only just begun.
