Bitcoin Soars to Nearly $69K, Then Plummets: Latest Market Update

Bitcoin Soars to Nearly $69K

In a stunning display of resilience, Bitcoin (BTC-USD) reached an all-time high of $68,869 on Tuesday, surpassing its previous record set in November 2021. The milestone marks a remarkable comeback for the world’s largest cryptocurrency, which suffered significant losses during the 2022 crash that led to the downfall of several major industry players, including the FTX exchange and its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried.

The recent surge in Bitcoin’s price has been largely attributed to the launch of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in January, which have provided everyday investors with widespread exposure to the digital asset. These ETFs have attracted nearly $8 billion from investors in just two months, with major Wall Street firms like BlackRock and Fidelity Investments leading the charge.

The demand for these ETFs has far exceeded expectations, according to Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise Asset Management, one of the firms that received approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission to operate a bitcoin ETF.

The increased demand for Bitcoin has also led to a supply crunch, with ETFs purchasing an average of 3,320–4,300 coins daily since the beginning of February, significantly more than the 900 coins being created daily by the Bitcoin network. This imbalance is expected to intensify further following the upcoming “halving” event scheduled for May, which will reduce the daily supply of new coins from 900 to 450.

Several money managers are now predicting that Bitcoin could rise above $100,000 before the end of 2024, with some even setting targets as high as $450,000 per coin. VanEck, for example, had previously set an $80,000 price target for 2024, which now appears to be conservative given the current market momentum.

While the recent rally has been driven by a combination of fundamental factors, such as the supply-demand imbalance and the launch of ETFs, psychological factors like the fear of missing out (FOMO) are also at play. According to Alex Thorn, head of research for Galaxy Digital, interest in Bitcoin across the general US population is still far from its peak compared to past rallies, suggesting that there is significant room for growth.

As the cryptocurrency market continues to evolve and mature, the potential for Bitcoin to reach new heights appears to be stronger than ever. However, investors should remain cautious, as the market’s volatility was on full display Tuesday when the price tumbled below $60,000 just hours after reaching its all-time high, serving as a reminder of the risks associated with investing in this nascent asset class.
