When Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, physician and philanthropist Priscilla Chan, jetted to India to attend the pre-wedding celebrations of Anant Ambani, son of Asian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, they left their usually understated luxury style behind. Over the course of three days filled with glamorous concerts, rituals, feasts and festivities leading up to Anant’s wedding to Radhika Merchant, the couple fully embraced bold, attention-grabbing “loud luxury” fashion.
Known for quiet luxury, subtle and expensive pieces that only the discerning eye recognizes, like Zuckerberg’s $300 plain gray t-shirts, the couple kicked off the celebrations in showstopping style. On Friday evening, Zuckerberg wore head-to-toe Alexander McQueen, including the brand’s eye-catching firefly jacket covered in intricate embroidery, priced at a whopping $7,000. Chan sparkled in a gold-embellished black gown valued at $15,000.
The next evening, the surprises continued as Zuckerberg appeared in a dazzling organza dress shirt handcrafted by Indian designer Rahul Mishra. The wildlife-inspired piece likely costs thousands based on similar bespoke items on Mishra’s website listing men’s formalwear over $7,000. Chan also glowed in custom attire by Mishra, emblazoned with golden birds and botanicals.
Sunday evening brought more one-of-a-kind glamour as Chan donned a vivid purple saree decorated with tiny flowers by an unnamed designer, and Zuckerberg complemented her in an earth-toned kurta suit adorned with leafy shapes.
The Zuckerbergs’ extravagant wardrobe for the celebrations stood out in stark contrast to their signature low-key style of expensive yet subtle pieces that contain no flashy logos. By fully embracing loud luxury fashion that shouts its exorbitant cost, the couple showed their respect for the legendary status of an Indian wedding, especially when it involves the heir of the nation’s richest family. Their embrace of local designers also nods to the highly-publicized event’s massive spotlight on Indian culture, creativity and business.
