Elon Musk has filed an explosive lawsuit against artificial intelligence startup OpenAI, its leaders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, and tech giant Microsoft. Musk alleges OpenAI violated contractual agreements and betrayed its founding mission to develop AI that benefits humanity by instead privatizing and commercializing advanced systems like GPT-4.
Musk, an early backer and co-founder of OpenAI, claims he was convinced to help launch the nonprofit in 2015 based on promises that its technologies would be freely available to the public in order to counter competitive threats from Big Tech. However, Musk argues OpenAI has now shifted to a for-profit model focused on maximizing profits for Microsoft, which has invested $13 billion into the startup.
The lawsuit centers around GPT-4, which Musk claims constitutes artificial general intelligence (AGI) with capabilities rivaling or exceeding human intelligence. Musk alleges OpenAI and Microsoft have improperly licensed and profited from GPT-4 despite agreeing OpenAI’s AGI research would remain dedicated to benefitting humanity.
Through the lawsuit, Musk seeks injunctions compelling OpenAI to adhere to its original mission and barring the firms from monetizing advanced AI systems developed under its former nonprofit status. Musk also requests accounting of donations meant to fund public-minded research and potential restitution of some of the $44 million he donated if the court finds OpenAI now operates for private gain.
Legal experts say Musk faces hurdles in the case but it could ramp up pressure on OpenAI and Silicon Valley to address growing concerns over AI’s broad societal impacts as the technology continues advancing rapidly. The lawsuit also thrusts tensions between Musk and OpenAI back into the spotlight after years of souring relations between the billionaire and the firm he helped create.
