The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently investigating potential lead contamination in various cinnamon products, including ground cinnamon and cinnamon-flavored applesauce. The investigation was triggered by reports of over 460 individuals, predominantly children, suffering from lead poisoning after consuming cinnamon-flavored applesauce containing cinnamon sourced from Ecuador.
The FDA has discovered elevated levels of lead in several ground cinnamon brands, raising concerns about the long-term health effects of consuming these products. Among the affected brands is Swad, a popular choice among Indian-American consumers, which is sold at Patel Brothers, a well-known grocery chain catering to the Indian community in the United States.
In response to these findings, the FDA has recommended recalls for ground cinnamon products from six distributors, including Swad from Patel Brothers, La Fiesta, Marcum, MTCI, Supreme Tradition, and El Chillar. Consumers who have purchased these products are advised to discontinue their use immediately and dispose of them properly to minimize the risk of lead exposure.
Lead poisoning can cause serious health issues, particularly in children, as it can affect their growth, development, and cognitive abilities. Symptoms of lead poisoning may include abdominal pain, constipation, fatigue, irritability, and learning difficulties.
The FDA is working closely with the affected distributors to ensure that the contaminated products are removed from store shelves and to prevent further distribution. Additionally, the agency is conducting a thorough investigation to identify the source of the lead contamination and implement necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Consumers who have concerns about their health or believe they may have been exposed to lead through contaminated cinnamon products should consult their healthcare provider for guidance and potential testing.
As the investigation continues, the FDA encourages consumers to remain vigilant and stay informed about any updates or additional product recalls related to this issue.
